Shirley Heights is an historic military compound, museum, restaurant and lookout that offers breathtaking views of the English Harbour. It’s also a great place to watch the sunset.
Getting there
There are two ways that you can get to Shirley Heights. You can take a cab there from almost anywhere on the island. I stayed at Antigua Village Beach Resort and the front desk arranged the roundtrip transportation for myself and other guests.
Another way to get there is to hike. I didn’t experience this, but it sounds pretty intriguing. You can start from Galleon Beach and it’s about a mile hike to Shirley Heights. Based on other bloggers reviews, it’s a moderate/challenging hike.
Weekly BBQ’s
Every Sunday and Thursday, locals and tourists head to Shirley Heights Lookout Restaurant and Bar for their weekly BBQ’s. This restaurant sells a variety of food and drinks (alcoholic and non-alcoholic). They even have a couple vegan and vegetarian options. There are also vendors outside the restaurant selling magnets, cups and other cute souvenirs or gifts. Dance and move to the beat of the house steelband.

I went to this weekly BBQ on a Sunday, and it was a great experience. The only thing to keep in mind is that it can get pretty crowded. The line for food was long. There were lines for drinks as well, but they weren’t long. When the sun was setting, a large crowd formed in front of the house steelband and people were dancing, clapping and taking videos.
