The Great Blue Hole helicopter tour- Belize

What is the Great Blue Hole

The Great Blue Hole is a large underwater sinkhole off the coast of Belize. Located near the center of the Lighthouse Reef, the Great Blue Hole is 124 m (407 ft) deep and 318 m (1,043 ft) across.

There are a couple of ways that you can visit the Great Blue Hole and that’s by diving, snorkeling and by air. I chose by air because I wanted to see it from the top.

Getting to the Great Blue Hole by helicopter

There are three popular companies that flies to the Great Blue Hole and that’s Maya Island Air, Tropic Air and Astrum Helicopters. The price for Maya Island Air and Tropic Air flights are pretty similar. Astrum Helicopters is more expensive because they do private flights.

For Maya Island Air and Tropic Air, there are three places to board the helicopters. You can board at Belize City, Caye Caulker and San Pedro. For Astrum Helicopters the pick up is in Belize City at Cisco Base heliport.

What to expect during the tour with Maya Island Air

The flight duration depends on where you’re picked up. I boarded the flight in San Pedro and my flight was around 1 hour from start to finish. From Caye Caulker the flight is around 1 hour and 15 minutes, and from Belize City the flight is around 1 hour and 30 minutes.

The take off was extremely smooth and almost immediately the scenery was breath taking. The ocean looked magnificent, from the amazing colors to the waves. It almost looked like a painting.

How to book the tour

You can book a tour with all three companies online. You will notice the availability when you’re in the process of booking. I suggest booking your flight in advance because the Great Blue Hole is a popular tour and can sell out quickly.
