The thought of solo travel can seem intimidating at first, definitely if it’s international. Many questions may run through your mind, such as where do I go? What do I do? Will I be safe? Will I be too lonely? Before I took my first international solo trip, I was a little intimated, but it was something I considered for a while. Even while considering traveling solo, I traveled to a plethora of countries with family and friends.
Planning My first international solo trip
In January 2024, I decided pretty last minute that I was going to take a short trip to Grenada. I was thinking about going to Grenada for months but never got around to planning and booking it. So about 3 weeks before my trip I decided that I was going to go… solo, and I booked my flights and hotel immediately. Over that next week, I created the itinerary, booked my tour, and I was ready to go.
This was going to be my first international solo trip, and also my first time traveling with only a backpack. Around that time, I already decided I wanted to start traveling somewhat similar to a backpacker, where I would only bring a backpack with all of my clothes, necessities and gadgets. My goal was to be better at packing lighter, by only bringing things that I needed.
Being on my first international Solo trip
I thought I was going to be nervous in the beginning, starting with the airport, but I wasn’t. I guess traveling internationally before this trip and having an idea of what to expect when it comes to airport protocols made me more comfortable. Exiting the Maurice Bishop International Airport in Grenada, I felt the cool fresh air on my face, heard the locals chatter, and felt a rush of excitement to get to explore Grenada.
The drive to my hotel, which was The Radisson Grenada Beach Resort was calm and scenic. I loved staying at The Radisson Grenada Beach Resort, it had everything I needed, the staff were very friendly and helpful, I felt very comfortable, and it was also conveniently located next to the Grand Anse Beach.
During my stay in Grenada, I went to the Concord Waterfall, a spice market, did a tour at Diamond Chocolate Factory, walked around Grand Anse, checked out the beach, and ate at an amazing vegan restaurant.

The joy of Solo traveL
Traveling solo to Grenada felt so fulfilling, and I immediately started thinking about what my next solo travel destination was going to be. So far, I’ve traveled to three countries solo, which are Grenada, Belize, and Guatemala. During my solo trips I climbed Mayan Ruins, did a helicopter tour over the Great Blue Hole, learned how to drive a golf cart, island hopped, ate amazing vegan dishes, stayed at great hotels/Airbnbs, met other people passionate about travel, and more.

What I enjoy most about solo travel is the freedom, flexibility, independency, quick thinking, decision-making, and just being able to spend time alone, which ultimately resulted in me getting to learn things about myself. It’s definitely something I believe every traveler should experience at least once.
