Tips For Staying in Bequia

Bequia is a beautiful island located in the Grenadines. It’s actually the largest island located in the Grenadines. Bequia is known for their white sand beaches, friendly people, and being calm and quiet. It’s also a great destination for slow paced travel. Here are a few tips for staying in Bequia.

Bequia ferry

The Bequia Express Ferry is very convenient. There are multiple ferries a day that depart from Kingstown and goes to Bequia and vice versa. For the ferry schedule, check out Bequia Express Ferry schedule. The ferry leaves on time, so I advise getting there at least 30 minutes before departure time. If you have luggage or heavy backpacks, there’s a station to put your belongings in. You have to buy your ticket in the ferry and there are two ticket options, which are one-way ($25EC) or roundtrip ($40EC). After buying your ticket, you can walk upstairs to sit while waiting for the ferry to take off. While waiting you can also take some picture and videos because the view is beautiful.

How to pay for things

The currency used in Bequia is the Eastern Caribbean Dollar. But Bequia also accepts United States Dollar. Most of the restaurants and markets accept Visa or Mastercard, but some of the smaller shops only accepts cash in either currency.

Transportation around the island

To get around Bequia, you can either take a taxi or rent a car. Taxis can be found at the Taxi Bequia Express Ferry. If you don’t want to walk to the Taxi Bequia Express Ferry, you can also ask a hotel, and they many be able to get you a taxi. I went into one of the mini markets on on the Belmont walkway and asked the cashier about a taxi, and she gave me a number to a taxi company. To rent a car, there are a couple of companies you can rent from, such as Bequia Rental Cars and Taxi Services, and Caribbean Rental Cars.

Stay in Port Elizabeth if you want to be close to the beach

If you want to be close to the beach, stay in Port Elizabeth. Near the Belmont Walkway, there are a variety of hotels, motels, and guest homes to choose from. A couple of them are Bequia Plantation Hotel, Gingerbread Suites, and The Village Apartments. I stayed in a mountain house, and the beach was about a 20 minute walk from me. But the walk is through the mountains and it’s rugged. It wasn’t a problem for me, but if walking isn’t your thing, it will be more convenient for you to stay closer to the beach.

Friday nights at Coco’s Place Restaurant and Bar

Friday Nights at Coco’s Place Restaurant and Bar, is a weekly event with live music, dancing, eating, and drinking. It starts around 8pm and goes on until around 12am, then a dj comes in and it turns into a party. Alot of the locals goes there, so if you like meeting locals, nightlife, and partying, this is a great way to spend your friday night in Bequia.

Mini markets

There are a couple of mini markets on the Belmont walkway. If you’re staying in a mountain house, like I did, there are a couple of mini markets as well. I stayed in a mountain house on Belmont Rd, and the closest mini markets was about a 15 minute walk. Just be careful because there are no sidewalks on the mountains, and cars are driving in both directions. Taking a taxi is another option, but if you could walk to it, I highly recommend it, it’s definitely more convenient than waiting for a taxi to take you there and back.

Go to the popular Princess Margaret beach

Princess Margaret Beach is the most popular beach in Bequia. The beach was named after Princess Margaret, who enjoyed swimming at the beach. The water is so calm, pristine, and clear. Even if going in the ocean isn’t your thing, just laying on the sand is great because the view is amazing.

The beach is right next to Belmont Walkway, and a bunch of different restaurants, shops, cafes, hotels, and more. It’s also walking distance to the Bequia Express Ferry, and you can access the Princess Margaret Trail from the Beach.
