Based on my experience of traveling while vegan, it can be hard sometimes finding good vegan food other than a salad. So once I have a destination in mind that I want to travel to, I immediately do research on the vegan restaurants and restaurants with vegan options they have. This involves finding the restaurants, checking out the menus then noting the hours and locations.

The restaurant research will help me when deciding on where to stay. If possible, I like to stay pretty close to a restaurant/restaurants that I can eat from, if needed. I also do research on the supermarkets, to get an idea of what they sell, as well as seeing how close a supermarket is to the Airbnb/hotels that I’m considering staying at.
Last year a group of friends, my sister, my boyfriend and I (it was 8 of us in total) went to Cusco, Peru for about two weeks. We stayed in a the San Sebastian neighborhood. This neighborhood has restaurants, a huge Tottus supermarket, clothing shops, street vendors, and only a 15 min drive from the airport and 20 min drive from downtown Cusco. The only con was that there were no vegan restaurants in the neighborhood or close enough to walk to. The closest vegan restaurants were in downtown Cusco. But thankfully the Tottus supermarket had a variety of food and produce, so we were able to cook.
Since I know it can be hard traveling while vegan, I always travel with something to eat. I will go into what I bring, in more detail in a later post.
